From corporate governance to ethical conduct

OVER the past year, the subject of corporate governance has been extensively covered in the press.

This column also gave its own perspective a couple of weeks ago.
The central bank has been at the forefront in ensuring banks adhere to corporate governance principles and has even gone to the extent of issuing guidelines to that effect. Why the sudden interest?

If one looks at the foundations of corporate governance principles, popularised by such reports as the Cadbury and King reports on corporate governance, they can by be traced to the collapse of high-profile companies. Hence, in Zimbabwe, the collapse of a number of banking institutions last year also brought to the fore the issue of corporate governance, and the Reserve Bank thus took the initiative to ensure compliance.
