Nonprofit Medical Center Voluntarily Takes on Sarbox Compliance


The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center expects to be certified Sarbanes-Oxley-compliant by outside auditor Ernst & Young late this month or early in September. The kicker? UPMC is a nonprofit public health care organization not required to comply with the strict corporate reform law. A spokesperson interviewed here says not only is the organization taking the steps because officials believe Sarbox-like compliance will eventually be required of the health care industry, but also because the publicly funded facility should be accountable to the community just as publicly traded companies must be accountable to their stockholders.
