California To Become First U.S. State to Cap Greenhouse Gas Emissions


California is likely to become the first U.S. state to mandate greenhouse gas caps from industry according to a deal agreed between Democrats and Republican governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The legislation will require all businesses to reduce emissions starting as soon as 2012 to meet a 25 percent cut from current levels by 2020. The legislation has passed in the state senate, and is likely to pass the assembly before being signed into law by the governor. The California Air Resources Board would develop targets for each industry and ensure they are met.
