Sustainability: Revolution as companies look at how to survive in the longer term


Very quietly a revolution has been going on behind the scenes, particularly in international businesses. It is one in which management accountants have been deeply involved. It is sustainability.

What started out as a quasi-environmental discipline has turned into a fundamental driver of business. Peter Simons, technical specialist at the management accounting body, CIMA, points to a simple reason. “It is the economics of sustainability,” he says. “The question of how the income stream can be maintained.”
