Women fall victim to growing wage gap


AUSTRALIAN women face bigger wage gaps for doing similar jobs than women in Syria, Indonesia and Thailand, it was revealed yesterday.

Australia was ranked 20th in the World Economic Forum's global gender gap index, down from its rank of 15 in 2006.

The ACTU president, Sharan Burrow, said women had been particularly vulnerable to losing their jobs during the economic downturn and said Australia's poor ranking reflected the Howard government's amendments to affirmative action laws in 1998.
