The Dutch authorities have ambitious objectives for saving energy and reducing CO2 emissions. The construction sector will have to approach new building projects in an innovative manner, and energy-saving measures must also be implemented in existing buildings. However, that is not always easy in the case of buildings of high historic or visual significance, due to their cultural and historic value. Nyenrode’s Center for Sustainability is showing that much can be done even for these buildings.

Restrictions and Opportunities Many buildings of historic or visual significance are poorly insulated and have obsolete internal systems. As a result, energy consumption in buildings of this type is considerably higher than in other premises. This means that there is much to be gained by energy-saving measures or generating sustainable energy generation in these buildings.
