Food Security

Population growth, rising incomes in emerging economies and the promotion of biofuels are increasing the demand for food and agricultural produce.

Similarly, long-term resource trends in land use, water, fossil fuels, and changing climatic conditions create both supply constraints for agricultural production and intensified risks for the global food system.

Food-import dependent countries and poor consumers are the hardest hit by these trends, which are increasing both commodity indices and price volatility. However, in the integrated global market, food price movements have ramifications for developing and developed countries alike, with the potential to trigger economic crises or serious social unrest.
