Fighting Fraud - Compliance spending picks up

Compliance spending picks up; aiming for MCI/Ebbers debacle to be the last of its kind, SOX preserves some time-honored American values

There's no doubt that corporate spending on compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) and other U.S. government regulations designed to fight fraud can be a heavy burden.

But a much heavier burden has been carried by the victims of the fraud that SOX is intended to fight. Case in point, the MCI/Worldcom debacle, in which the malfeasance of CEO Bernard Ebbers resulted in the loss of billions of dollars to stockholders and employees alike.
