How ethics codes can be made to work

Faced with serious lapses in behaviour, companies are again reaching for the ethics toolbox. Citigroup, in trouble over its European bond trade and regulatory breaches in Japan, is educating employees about their responsibilities and setting up a hotline for staff to raise concerns.

Ogilvy & Mather, the advertising company where two former executives were found guilty last month of overcharging the US government, says it has introduced a tough accounting compliance programme, including an ethics officer and an employee hotline.
