Canadian Co-operative Association: Seven Steps to Renewing the Board

This issue of Governance Matters explores perhaps the most surprising results of this research: the degree to which co-operatives get involved in their own board succession. Traditionally, the selection of board members in co-ops has been a decision left exclusively to members, consistent with co-operative principles. Yet our research found that many co-operatives and their boards get actively involved in the renewal of their boards, including identifying new candidates. Where is the “right” place to draw the line between members and boards in this area? Where do you draw the line? Why?
