Compliance As Window Dressing

Lets start this week with an interesting survey that said data security is the top concern among storage managers. Jump slightly ahead in the same story, and see that complying with Sarbanes-Oxley or HIPAA regulations is not such a big worry.

Granted, data security is a different function than making sure it's retained and easily retrievable. But HIPAA and other laws are pretty clear about data privacy, a clear security function. Are too many functions or responsibilities being heaped on to storage managers? Or are we about to see a new round of chief compliance officer appointments? I don't fully understand how storage managers can be so concerned about security, but yet give much shorter shrift to data compliance. Unless, of course, compliance is just so much window dressing.
