The publicised collapse of Enron in the autumn of 2001, and the earlier collapse in shareholder value at Marconi, have highlighted as never before the critical role played by Boards in the very survival of companies. Discussion of the role of Non-Executive Directors (NEDs) within companies, government, the regulators and professional bodies has never been more intense.
This research was undertaken from November 2001 to February 2002 among FTSE Chairmen, that is Chairmen of the largest British companies quoted on the London Stock Exchange including 68% of the FTSE 100. We believe this represents a significant sample base. Face-to-face interviews were led by our Board Practice partners on the basis of an agreed questionnaire.
