DOL Defeats AFL-CIO's Challenge to Financial Reporting Rules

A key May 31 decision from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit gives U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine Chao and her department a major victory over the AFL-CIO's challenge to new, much more onerous financial reporting rules. With the labor federation beset by infighting as President John Sweeney's current term nears its end in July, the decision leaves intact a new mandate that unions must report all receipts and disbursements of $5,000 or more with the name, address, purpose, date, and amount of each transaction.
