Corruption, poor governance hinder economic security

Widespread corruption and poor governance stand in the way of achieving country’s economic security and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

"Effective and urgent steps are needed to contain the menace that has started eating into the vitals of the national economy," Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, President of Bangladesh Economic Association (BEA) told a seminar yesterday.

Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) organised the seminar at its auditorium in the city. Ambassador Mufleh R Osmany, Chairman, Board of Governors of BIISS presided over the seminar.

Dr. Kholiquzzaman in his keynote paper said, "donor support to achieve the MDGs is not sufficient. In this perspective we should concentrate on proper utilisation of our limited national resources. But to free the country from a serious disease like corruption and improving governance is a must to this effect."
