Murdoch Son Leaves News Corp., Tossing Succession Into Question

I have a novel idea. This is a major, New York Stock Exchange-listed company. Why not pick the most qualified candidate?

A News Corporation spokesman was quoted as saying: "Rupert has said he plans on staying as chairman as long as he is mentally and physically fit to do so." Shame he didn't think to say "as long as the majority of shareholders want him to".

James, 32, runs British Sky Broadcasting, the satellite television service that is 34 percent owned by the News Corporation. Rupert Murdoch, 74, the chairman and chief executive of the News Corporation, has made clear that he would like one of his children to succeed him.
