For years, data have shown that people who are not white men have gotten a skimpier slice of the American pie. They have had a harder time finding jobs, are less likely to be promoted and are often paid less for comparable work.
What is perhaps less known is what they are doing about it. They are taking their marbles and setting up shop for themselves.
The Census Bureau recently released a study on business ownership in 2002 that shows a sharp increase in the number of businesses owned by women or members of minority groups. (The bureau defines "owned" as more than half-owned.)
