Lord Burns recommends ‘effective’ board for the FA

The Abbey National chairman yesterday recommended creation of a new Football Association board, including independent non-executive directors, to take “full responsibility” for running the body, whose annual turnover has risen sharply in recent years to within striking distance of £200m.

The new board should comprise two executive directors, two or three independent non-executives and three directors each appointed by the professional and community, or grass-roots, games. As such, it would be closer in composition to the sort of boards one expects to see presiding over blue-chip companies.
