What effective leaders should keep in mind
Great leadership is not measured merely by the success of a business at a single point in time. The test is building an organisation that is adaptive, resilient and ready for the challenges of tomorrow and beyond.
That requires leaders to emerge throughout the organisation, almost continuously over time. The challenge, therefore, is to develop and inspire effective leaders. As every manager and leader knows, this is easier said than done.
Some of the latest research about leadership is generating new insights into this age-old challenge. But it is coming from odd places, such as neuroscience, complexity theory and positive psychology.
Research has shown that people can improve on the behavioural habits that determine how effective they are as leaders. These habits include cognitive skills (such as thinking about systems and pattern recognition), skills of emotional intelligence (such as self awareness, self confidence and emotional self control) and social intelligence competencies (such as empathy and communications).
