Auditors warned over legal protection


The head of the US accounting regulator has warned auditors that the American people will not support their being granted new protection against potentially catastrophic legal claims.

William McDonough, chairman of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, who on Friday announced plans to stand down on November 30, or when his successor is appointed, told the FT that auditors could not expect lawmakers to consider providing them with liability protection, until they had won back public confidence.
