Ethical Corporation reported earlier in the year on the resolution of the United Nations Commission for Human Rights that the UN should appoint a special representative on business and human rights – a resolution that was approved by the Economic and Social Council.
In late July, Kofi Annan announced that he had appointed to this role professor John Ruggie, currently Kirkpatrick professor of international affairs and director of the Centre for Business and Government at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
Ruggie’s mandate includes identifying and clarifying standards of corporate responsibility and accountability with regard to human rights.
An interim report presenting views and recommendations for consideration by the Commission on Human Rights is due at its 62nd session in 2006 and a final report in 2007.
