The Global Compact Office today announced a constitutional milestone in the evolution of the Global Compact – a new governance framework.
During the past year the Global Compact Office – at the direction of the UN Secretary-General – held extensive consultations with representatives of all Global Compact participant and other stakeholder groups in order to reach consensus on refinements to the initiative.
The need for a new governance framework is clear and pressing – with more than 2,400 participants worldwide and nearly 50 country networks, the Global Compact has reached a stage of maturity and scope that demand greater focus, transparency and sustained impact. This was a theme echoed at the Global Compact Leaders Summit in June 2004 at which time the Secretary-General called for the strategic review.
Given the diverse nature of the Global Compact, the consultation process inevitably featured a range of valuable perspectives, opinions, and expectations. The consultation process was completed in mid June 2005 and on 1 July our recommendations were presented to the Secretary-General. After thorough consideration, on 12 August the Secretary-General approved all elements of the proposed governance framework.
