GCs See Increased Workload due to SOX


With increased responsibility, law departments look into increased hiring

Corporate scandals followed by the passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 rocked the nation's business and accounting sectors. Affected professionals wondered whether they could meet all of the act's stringent and complicated corporate accounting and governance rules and trembled to imagine the fate that might befall them should they fail. At first, no one gave much thought to another segment of the corporate structure that would shoulder a good portion of the Sarbanes-Oxley load -- the office of general counsel. However, since 2002, general counsel offices, as the hubs of all matters regulatory and ethical, have seen a significant expansion of their duties and obligations.
