Upcoming Stock Market Transformation Will Have Profound Impact on Corporate Governance, Regulation and Shareholder Value, Experts Conclude


Upcoming stock market mergers and fast- moving technology will have a profound impact on corporate governance, regulation, shareholder value and the responsibilities of pension fiduciaries -- an impact that is not being fully appreciated by market participants. That was the conclusion of three financial experts, who presented papers at a forum here today sponsored by Investors Action Foundation.

The pending mergers -- involving the New York Stock Exchange and Archipelago Holdings and the Nasdaq Stock Market and Instinet -- are part of what one of the experts, Robert Shapiro, former Under Secretary of Commerce for Economic Affairs, called "the transformation of American securities markets," the result of "the new economic sovereignty of bytes" and "the force of economic competition."
