E-Government -- Good Governance Online?


Recently, there has been a major drive to put government services online supported by significant investments from government institutions, businesses and international and national non-profit organizations. E-government benefits vary: e-procurement increases efficiency and transparency and helps curb corruption; on-line application for jobs in public sector results in trust and transparency for job applicants and efficiency gains for the government; etc.

E-Government is one of the main goals of the eEurope 2005 Action Plan - an initiative taken by the EU leaders. Public sector computerization will cost Europe €88bn in 2005. A huge amount of money that must be spent wisely and accountably. Still, there are more questions than answers with regard to this and related projects. Does the government know what we, the citizens want? Are e-government projects designed entirely for us? Do we really use them? Will they make life easier and meet our needs? What are the limits?
