Assign blame where it's deserved


would like to tell you two true stories. They are both called The Day the Wheels Came Off. Both involve cars and wheels that do, indeed, come off. Both contain action and danger and near-death experiences. In the end, though, both are about blame – only in one story blame is meted out, and in the other it isn't.

The first story will be well known to anyone peculiar enough to think motor racing is an enjoyable sport. The car is a Formula One racing car and the driver is Nigel Mansell. He is about to win the 1991 Portuguese Grand Prix, only at one of the pit stops a mechanic fails to bolt a rear wheel on properly and, as the car goes screeching away, the wheel rolls off. The world championship is lost.
