The World Bank's special focus on good governance since President Wolfowitz took over is very welcome and it is hoped that action follows words. This is another necessary good action step.

World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz, who has promised to crack down on corruption, has appointed Suzanne Rich Folsom to head the bank's anti-corruption unit, according to a notice to member countries.

Folsom, a US national, has been acting director of the World Bank's Department of Institutional Integrity since October 2005 following the departure of Maarten de Jong.

She joined the bank in 2003 as counselor to then World Bank President James Wolfensohn and will retain that post as well under Wolfowitz.

"I asked Suzanne to serve as acting director of INT ... because of her strong qualifications as an attorney with a background in ethics, governance and compliance matters," Wolfowitz said.

The bank's anti-corruption unit, which includes 50 lawyers, forensic auditors and investigators, was established to probe fraud and corruption in World Bank projects in developing countries.
