DDI's latest research, undertaken as part of MORI's annual Captains of Industry research, explores the working lives of senior level leaders in some of the top organisations in France, Germany and the UK. Its findings help us understand the very different ways leaders operate in these neighbouring countries, and the challenges this presents for global organisations. We offer some insights into the cultural impact on and differing philosophies of executives in these locations and how they view the challenges of their position. Comparative data and frank verbatims reveal three styles of leadership across these countries: the Autocrat; the Democrat and the Meritocrat.
The research debunks the myth of power hungry executives basking in gilded boardrooms. Instead, it presents a picture of senior leaders in the new millennium as collaborators who regard the automony their role brings as carrying with it heavy responsibility for the lives of those whom they employ, who see their main role as building leading their team and acting as a catalyst for talent throughout the organisation. Their candid remarks about life at the top reveal much about the behaviours and motivations of today's executives and how best to prepare for such positions.
