New S.E.C. Division Chief

The Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday named a securities lawyer, John W. White, as director of the agency's division of corporation finance.

Mr. White, 58, who succeeds Alan L. Beller, is a partner at the law firm of Cravath, Swaine & Moore, where he has worked for 25 years, the S.E.C. statement said.

He will join the agency March 20.

Last month, Mr. White became a member of the Standing Advisory Group of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, a position he will resign to take the S.E.C. post.
