Now that Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance is sneaking up on smaller and foreign-based companies, here's a timely look at one successful compliance effort made back in 2003 and 2004. --Editor
For Jay Haberland, the call came in June 2003. The call, that is, to leave his post as chief financial officer for Sikorsky Helicopters and take an even more critical role with Sikorsky's parent company, United Technologies Corp. His new job title was vice president of business controls, and his task was to grab the Sarbanes-Oxley compliance bull by the horns for all of UTC. Specifically, Haberland needed to make sure the company could meet the 2004 deadline for section 404 of the legislation, which mandates that companies file an internal controls assessment with their annual report.
