Toyota board drives paper away

TOYOTA'S paperless boardroom went online in Melbourne in July. It's ready for videoconferencing at the touch of a button: blinds cascade down, lights dim and 19 screens pop up around the big table.
A large screen at the front of the room can be used to project images.

It has been so successful, one may be installed in Sydney.

Company secretary Damien Bayard says the Toyota Australia paperless boardroom has reduced and simplified the amount of information that directors need before meetings.

Another advantage is being able to distribute all board material electronically.

"We used to send out big packs of information," Bayard says. "We save about five reams of paper a month."

James Scott, an information systems manager at Toyota, says directors can access the system from anywhere in the world so they always have access to material and they can prepare for board meetings.
