Departures from code are not automatically failures

Sir, So the report by Pirc, the shareholder voting agency, shows that only a quarter of companies fully comply with the combined corporate governance code introduced in November 2003 ("Minority comply with code on good practice", March 8). Unfortunately, this does not recognise the huge steps companies have taken towards compliance with the new code.

Sir, You report (March 8) that corporate governance watchdog, Pirc, has found from a survey of 444 companies that more than three quarters of UK boards and their directors do not "comply" with the much globally respected UK code on corporate governance.
