The European Commission has adopted a proposal for a new strategy for the Caribbean that will see greater support for good governance, natural disaster management and the poverty fight.
In a statement released on Thursday, the EU said it wished to shape a political partnership based on shared values to address the Carib-bean region's economic and environmental opportunities and to promote social cohesion. "What we are proposing with this new strategy is mutually beneficial partnerships for development, democracy and security," Commissioner for Develop-ment and Humanitarian Aid, Louis Michel was quoted as saying.
He said the EU must prevent the region from drifting into political instability and help it achieve its long-term development goals in a self-sustaining manner. Michel added that the partnership would be a strong link that would help to address the important challenges of globalisation that face the region today.
