EU Commissioner frowns on Gas de France-Suez merger


Is it a coincidence that the Commissioner that complains is the Italian, just at the time when the Prime Minister of Italy complains that an Italian company is being kept out of the French market.

The vice president of the European Commission criticised on Tuesday a plan by France for state-run Gaz de France to take over French energy group Suez, saying it violated the spirit of the Europe-wide competition.

"In form, the operation is not illegal," Franco Frattini, who is also European Justice Commissioner, said on France's Europe 1 radio station. "But it is a blow against the spirit of the European common market."

The move, announced over the weekend by French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin, effectively blocked an announced bid for Suez by Italian energy group Enel.
