
The role of the non-executive director of a quoted company has certainly changed. “The other day, I had a newly appointed non-executive come to see me, and he carried two briefcases,” says Peter Breen, senior partner in the board practice of search firm Heidrick & Struggles International.
“One contained a pile of briefing papers six inches thick for his new job. It wasn’t something you can flick through on the way to the meeting.”
