SOX business takes Tidwell DeWitt to UK


Riding a wave of new compliance-related business created by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, Tidwell DeWitt LLC is expanding its client base abroad.

The Birmingham-based accounting firm in recent years has built a new line of business providing what are known as SAS 70 audits. Publicly traded companies outsourcing any functions that could be considered material to the public company's financial reporting must verify that the companies they are doing business with have sufficient internal controls in place to ensure the integrity of pertinent data they handle or process, explains Charles Denyer, senior manager for Tidwell DeWitt's regulatory compliance group. And SAS 70 audits have become an industry-accepted certification method.

SAS 70 has been around since the early 1990s, Denyer says, but tighter controls mandated by Sarbanes-Oxley have created a surge in demand for the service among a range of industries.
