Richard Cavanagh, who's stepping down as chief executive of the Conference Board, is leaving the economic research organization in much different shape than where he found it 10 years ago. In the last decade, the nonprofit has expanded its research overseas and leaped into the corporate governance debate.
"He's done a tremendous job for the Conference Board, and he's going to leave some pretty big shoes to fill," says Lord Colin Marshall, former chief executive of British Airways (nyse: BAB - news - people ) and chairman of the nonprofit's board from 2002 to 2003.
After Enron collapsed, Cavanagh convened a commission to study corporate governance. The commission issued a report with dozens of recommendations, many of which are now either law or common practice.
