The good word on restatements


"Restatement" it's a word that's been in the business media a lot lately and one investors should get used to hearing.

While a company announcing it is going to restate its financial results, often over a period of years, sounds scary, it's part of a trend small investors should welcome.

The restatements Ottawans are perhaps most familiar with involve Nortel, a company that has become a poster child of sorts for the whole process of going back over the books and recrunching the numbers.

Other recent restatements involve GM, whose new and improved numbers could land it in a whole heap more trouble than it's already in, and Ottawa's own Zim Corp., headed by Michael Cowpland.
