Stress Linked to Depression
Evidence mounts that working in the stressful environment of startups might contribute to serious medical problems.
Harvard Medical School researchers have shown that chronic exposure to a stress hormone directly leads to symptoms of depression, adding to previous studies suggesting that working long hours in the frequently stressful environment of a startup can have negative consequences for health.
The finding was announced on Sunday in the journal Behavioral Neuroscience.
People who work overtime have a 61 percent higher injury rate, when statistical methods are used to take away factors such as age and sex, according to University of Massachusetts Medical School researchers in a study published last year (see Startup Hours Threaten Health).
Prior to the most recent study, however, it was not known whether the high levels of a hormone called cortisol found in people with depression were a symptom of the condition or actually played a role in causing it.
