Ukraine leader advised to probe gas deal

The way that Gazprom is going about its business stinks, in particular with its shady subsidiaries, and should be thoroughly investigated. We await the Global Witness Report with interest.

Europe needs to keep Gazprom at arms length and not allow it to use its cash to buy up western companies and implement its questionable practices in Europe. In additon, as the cash-filled arm of the Russian government, they should not be allowed to renationalize companies in the west along the way.

Energy resources need to be diversified immediately. Europe should look to north africa, not only because that is where the close alternative resources are but also because they need the capital required to explore and develop these resources.

Pipelines should be built and, even better, local energy facilities linked to the European grid.

The time to begin is well overdue!

Ukraine's President Viktor Yushchenko must investigate the companies at the heart of a controversial natural gas deal with Russia or risk undermining his pro-western reform drive, acc-ording to a hard-hittingreport from Global Witness, the respected human rights group.

In a report due out on Monday, the UK-based watchdog will say the lack of transparency around gas supplies from Turkmenistan to Ukraine by RosUkrEnergo, a secretive Swiss-registered company part-owned by Gazprom of Russia, also threatens the security of gas supplies to Europe.

In adding its voice to the controversy surrounding RosUkrEnergo, Global Witness is increasing the political pressure on MrYushchenko, who is currently embroiled in tense coalition talks with the leaders of other pro-western political parties, some of whom are keen to annul the gas deal.
