UN to Vote Next Secretary General

The two presidents of the UN (Argentine Ambassador Cesar Mayoral-Security Council during March and Jan Eliasson-General Assembly) will meet this weekend to discuss the election process for the next UN Secretary General.

These consultations will be held four days after the 15 members of the Security Council held a closed-door informal meeting on the succession of current UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, whose second five-year term ends December 31.

Under the current rules, the 191 members of the General Assembly should approve the candidate to the highest UN post based on recommendations by the Security Council.
