
Mercer has been analyzing CEO compensation in 350 large U.S. companies for over a decade with the data published annually in a special supplement of The Wall Street Journal . Each year the Mercer 350 prompts numerous press reports that typically focus on the significant year-over-year changes in CEO pay. We believe the debate over CEO pay, which has been going on longer than our study, could be informed by taking a longer view. This Perspective reviews the results of our studies from 1996 to 2005, capturing the lead-up to the dot-com bubble, its spectacular pop and the current era of strengthened corporate governance and greater transparency.
