Abramovich backs Rosneft IPO


First they had to set aside a portion of the deal and try to sell it to state-owned petroleum companies, then they put pressure on private petroleum companies to invest, in both cases with nice juicy alternative deals added to sweeten the pill, deals not available to other shareholders. Now the Russian government is calling in their old friends to back the deal.

The Rosneft IPO is clearly going badly.

Roman Abramovich, Russia's richest oligarch and owner of Chelsea Football Club, has thrown his support behind the controversial initial public offering of Rosneft, giving a boost to the Russian oil company's efforts to attract heavyweight investors.

Mr Abramovich placed a bid for a stake earlier this week, according to people familiar with the details. The bid is likely to be worth several hundreds of millions of dollars.
