The responsibilities of government


Jeremy Taylor takes a detailed look at the the government’s pensions white paper, and examines the differing responses from business organisations

The Department for Work and Pensions’ white paper Security in Retirement: towards a new pensions system was published on May 25, 2006 in the wake of the second report of the Pensions Commission chaired by Lord Turner. It has to be seen in the context of the Turner Report and that report’s central conviction that as they now stand, the private and state pension systems will deliver increasingly inadequate and unequal results.

The white paper proposes that the link with average earnings should be restored “during the next parliament”
