U.S. Concerned with Irresponsible Governance in Latin America

Secretary of State Rice cites Venezuela and Bolivia as examples

The United States is not concerned with the emergence of leftist governments in Latin America, but rather with irresponsible governance by nations in the region, according to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Instead, she explained, regional governments' adherence to democratic principles and the advancement of economic freedoms define their ties to the United States. By way of example, she cited the "excellent" relationships the United States enjoys with the leftist governments of Brazil and Chile.
