Governance Focus recommends Ingrid Betancourt
Governance Focus recommends Ingrid Betancourt for the EU´s Sakharov Prize
According to Wikipedia, the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, named after Soviet scientist and dissident Andrei Sakharov, was established in December 1985 by the European Parliament as a means to honour individuals or organizations who had dedicated their lives to the defence of human rights and freedoms.
Ingrid Betancourt put herself in danger of kidnap several times during her election campaign to highlight the human rights deficit of this practice. She was taken and is still being held.
A fitting prize for her and in representation of the other hostages.
