Meetings to Examine Women's Political Participation and Contributions to Economy and Social Protection

The 40th Meeting of Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean will be held on 3 and 4 October 2006 in Santiago, Chile. Attending the two-day session will be high-level national authorities responsible for monitoring women's status and policies to achieve gender equity in the region.

The meeting, which begins on Tuesday, 3 October at 9:00 am in the Raúl Prebisch Conference Room of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago (Av. Dag Hammarskjöld 3477, Vitacura), will be opened by José Luis Machinea, Executive Secretary of the UN regional commission, and Patricia Espinosa, chair of the meeting and President of Mexico's National Women's Institute.

The Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, a subsidiary body of ECLAC, is the region's leading inter-governmental forum for gender analysis of public policies and monitoring of the Beijing Platform for Action (Fourth World Conference on Women, 1995) and the Mexico City Consensus (Ninth Session of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, 2004).
