Public Displays Of Bad Leadership


First, President Bill Clinton and Hewlett-Packard (nyse: HPQ - news - people ) board Chairwoman Patricia Dunn have now both learned the hard way that if you're a leader, people will talk--and what they say might make the front page. They've also learned that those headline tell-all tales can be humiliating.

In the last week, Bill Clinton has been reduced to taking public issue with, of all things, an ABC mini series, The Path to 9/11. And in the last week, Patricia Dunn was reduced to being the poster woman for bad manners, bad judgment and bad leadership in corporate America.

On the face of it, Clinton objected to some fictionalized scenes in the two-part docudrama that depicted him and other members of his administration as having responded to the threat of terrorism slowly and sluggishly.
