Babies still put a bump in women's career paths


Australia's fertility rate may be increasing, but pregnancy is neither a protection from discrimination in the workplace nor a guarantee of paid maternity leave.

An Australian Bureau of Statistics survey has found that only a third of new mothers use paid maternity leave, although just under half manage to take paid leave in some form to cover the birth of a baby, using either regular holidays or sick leave.

Just over a fifth of women reported difficulties at work during pregnancy.

These ranged from "inappropriate or negative" comments to more serious issues of discrimination, such as missing out on a promotion or on a training or development opportunity.
