Offsetting emissions: Achieving green credentials in the eyes of the consumer


As they come to terms with consumers worried about climate change, companies realise that green credentials can be as important as the quality of their products.

One way of doing so is carbon offsetting. First, companies calculate the emissions resulting from their carbon-producing activities. Then they help fund projects that cut a similar amount of emissions. Setting off all emissions is called “carbon-neutral”.

Offsetting has gained massively in popularity recently. HSBC, the Man Group, and BSkyB have all become “carbon-neutral”, while the UK government neutralised its presidency of the G8 last year and the rock band Coldplay offset the emissions from producing its last album.
