Growth is the best weapon against poverty


Growth is indeed the best weapon against poverty.

Who is going to tell the rich countries, especially the G7, that growth in poor countries comes from opening up markets to them.

The failure of Doha shows that the rich countries are not really serious about free trade or about the real meaning of the title.

The Group of Twenty finance ministers and central bank governors will meet in Melbourne this coming weekend. The meeting's theme, "Building and Sustaining Prosperity", recognises the world's substantial economic progress of recent years, at the same time as reminding us that durable economic growth and development, and sustained reductions in poverty, require sound policies and a long-term approach.

In 2000, 190 countries, including Australia, agreed on the Millennium Development Goals, an ambitious set of global targets to reduce poverty over the next 15 years. Six years on, while we have not made poverty history, we are making progress.
